51jkI9h7e1L._SX336_BO1,204,203,200_Colum McCann is an internationally best selling author and has received many honors for his fiction, story collections, short film.  He is also a contributor to The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic and The Paris Review.

Thirteen Ways of Looking is a collection of three of McCann’s short stories. A retired judge reflects on his life’s work, unaware as he goes about his daily routines that this particular morning will be his last; a mother is spending Christmas alone with her son who then becomes missing; a writer constructs a story about a Marine in Afghanistan calling home on New Year’s Eve.

McCann charts the territory of chance and the profound and intimate consequences of even our smallest moments.  Deeply personal, subtly subversive, at times harrowing and indeed funny yet also full of comfort.

This excellent writer has a wonderful use of vocabulary—and characters with interesting perspectives.
